10 mars 2012: SDI-OG membres



Chers membres et amis de la SDI-OG,

 

Une autre année s'est déroulée pour la communauté SDI, mais 2011 marquera pour toujours le parcours de notre section Ottawa-Gatineau, créée il y a déjà 39 ans, en 1973. L'âme de la SDI-OG a changé radicalement depuis que Vivian nous a quittés. Non seulement nous avons perdu avec elle notre pivot centrale et la mémoire institutionnelle, mais tous les membres de notre Bureau de direction ont aussi décidé de ne pas continuer dans leur fonctions, et, pour sa part, Bill a du se retirer de son poste de président, du au règlement de la SDI et ceci en dépit de ses exploits.

Par conséquent, un nouveau bureau de direction a été élu en Juillet avec un point en commun:

Tous ses membres étaient nouveaux à la SDI et, par force majeure, à ses rouages !!

L'enthousiasme du début a vite du faire face à un apprentissage sur le champ, avec un autre défi de taille: le bureau est formé en grande partie par de jeunes professionnels, qui soit ont les soirées remplies d'études post-académiques, ou bien sont submergés par des surcharges de travail.


Nous avons enfin réussi à nous organiser, grâce aussi à un bon group de volontaires, et on a pu monter, dans les derniers deux mois, 4 événements intéressant, dans des domaines bien différents:

  • Analyzing Current Developments in the Middle East: Two Views from the Region (12 décembre)
  • Global Development, Water and the Gathering Storm (14 décembre)
  • Governance, Education and the Environment (16 janvier)
  • Challenges and Opportunities in the Field: Cooperation among Partners in Emergencies, Conflict and Post-Conflict Areas (dans le cadre de la semaine pour le développement internationale 2012 de l'ACDI) (8 Février)

Ayant pris de l'élan, plusieurs événements intéressants sont déjà prévus dans le court terme, comme:


  • 10 mars: Aid and Education Quality in Developing Countries
  • 15 mars: Post-Authoritarian Politics in the Middle East: Challenges Ahead (probablement au CRDI)
  • 22 mars: Activité conjointe (EWB/CWRA/SDI), à l'occasion de la journée internationale de l'eau
  • avril: Sécurité alimentaire en Afrique: Défis et opportunités (bilingue)
  • avril/mai: Le récent Programme Détaillé de Développement de l'Agriculture Africaine (possiblement bilingue)
  • mars/avril: Women's Economic Empowerment Approach to development
  • avril/mai: The Civilian Peace Service Canada
    avril/mai: Islamic NGOs in the provision of humanitarian assistance
  • avril/mai: Post-conflict health systems and gender equity
  • avril/mai: Challenge of Educating Somali Girls in refugee Camps (avec EUMC-WUSC)
  • mai/juin: ers une effective responsabilité sociale d'entreprise: Responsabilités de chaque partie prenante (en français et en anglais)
On songe déjà à ce qu'on peut organiser pour le 40éme anniversaire du SDI-OG, à venir en 2013.


Des nouveaux partenariats, au Canada et partout dans le monde, en anglais et en français, ainsi que les nouvelles technologies de communication, vont augmenter les webinaires en ligne avec des auditoires et des orateurs, comme on a déjà fait avec l' Australie. On est aussi en train de moderniser notre réseau médiatique, rénover notre page web, mettre à jour nos canaux de communication, comme Facebook et, prochainement, Twitter.


Les jeunes membres façonnent la SDI vers la vision que leur génération conçoit du développement international.


Je vous écris aujourd’hui pour vous encourager à renouveler ou commencer votre confiance et appui à la SDI-OG en (re-) devenant membre pour 2012 (régulier $50, institutionnel $100 et étudiant $20). Ceci vous donnera accès à plusieurs avantages, comme des entrées réduites à nos événements, l’invitation à des rencontres de réseautage, et à notre publication périodique “Development”.

20 janvier 2012: SID International Welcomes a New President


Ambassador Juma Volter Mwapachu of Tanzania elected as President of SID by the new Governing Council.


Amb. Mwapachu was until recently Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC) where he oversaw the growth of this regional economic bloc and operationalized many of its key achievements including the East African Customs Union, negotiations for the East African Common Market as well as the expansion of the bloc with the admission of Rwanda and Burundi as members. The East African Community today encompasses Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda as members and has combined population of some 140 million people and GDP of approximately some US$ 140 billion (the fourth largest in Africa). Amb. Mwapachu also chaired the task force of Chiefs Executives of COMESA, EAC and SADC, with the ambitious task of establishing a grand free trade area from the Cape of Good Hope to Cairo. Prior to his appointment to the EAC, Amb. Mwapachu was Tanzania's ambassador to France and has previously held positions in both the public and private sectors.

9 octobre 2011: UNEP North American Major Groups and Stakeholders Consultation


Dear SID Members,

I am pleased to inform you that I will be in Washington next week, invited to the UNEP Regional Consultation with Civil Society Representatives. (see the attached agenda). My participation is finally going be at no cost for SID.

9 octobre 2011: WUSC - EUMC Innovation et le Développement Durable


Chers Membres de la SDI,

J'ai le plaisir de partager avec vous l'invitation que l'on viens de recevoir de la part de WUSC-EUMC, un des nos plus actifs membres institutionnels, à l'occasion du Forum International qu'ils organisent sur l'Innovation et le Développement Durable cela sera une bonne occasion pour partager l'expertise des groupes de travail au cours des différentes sessions plénières et des ateliers. Le Forum sera aussi présenté en directe sur le site web et l'on pourra poser des questions par chat.

SDI sera pratiquement présent dans la plupart des travaux et les organisateurs ont bien voulu intégrer le SDI dans le programme de Spot Light Séries.

Meeting of the SID-OG Gender Network

The fall 2011 meeting of the SID-OG Gender Network was held on Tuesday, September 20.

15 NGO reps showed up, including three long distance. NGOs represented included World Vision, Save, CARE, PLAN, Oxfam, WaterCan, CUSO/VSO, Match, WUSC, USC, plus a couple of independents.

The topic was monitoring and evaluating gender equality results. We workshopped a few results/indicators from various NGOs around the room plus tossed around the idea of how to measure long term social change half way through the change process in a meaningful way. Groups mentioned checklists, report cards, and self assessments as useful methods. NGOs are also struggling with somehow ensuring that program level results in GE are meaningful, given the challenges related to having to use culturally specific indicators for specific projects and then rolling those up into universal, program level indicators of GE change. Participants presented possible solutions.

The SID Gender Network (GN) was formed about 3 years ago to provide an independent networking space for gender specialists in civil society in the NGO community (currently 13 organizations) and among consultants.

- It provides an opportunity for members to discuss day to day challenges regarding, for example, how to implement gender policy in an organization, how to carry out a gender audit, capacity building of staff etc.

-GN meets quarterly, chair and note-takers rotate, have list of topics to choose from.

The SID Gender Work Group (GWG) was formed to assist SID-OG in its mandate: to allow members of SID-OG to learn about best practices in the community, stimulate discussions and educate the public through events.

SID GN and GWG complement each other, since GN would provide adequate expertise and improved best practices, while GWG might facilitate the transmission of findings to a wider audience, as and when convenient. In line with SID principles, neither the GN nor GWG are advocacy oriented.

Join us for an information session and hear from CUSO-VSO staff and returned volunteers. With over 50 years experience in volunteering and development, we are actively recruiting Canadians and Americans to work in partnership with local colleagues, sharing their skills and expertise to help find long-term, sustainable solutions to extreme poverty. Our volunteers build relationships and memories that will stay with them for a lifetime.

CUSO-VSO is currently recruiting volunteers to fill long-term (1-2 year) placements with our partners overseas in over 40 countries. We are currently recruiting volunteers from a range of professional backgrounds - such as business, health, education, natural resource management, community and social development.

We'll be covering key questions, such as:
  • What does CUSO-VSO do overseas?
  • What is the role of an overseas volunteer?
  • What skills and competencies do volunteers need?
  • What training and support does CUSO-VSO provide to volunteers?

SID NL conference on Global Values

On Wednesday 14 September, the closing event of the 2010-2011 SID Netherlands Lecture Series 'Global Values in a Changing World' will take place in The Hague within the annual conference of the SID NL Chapter.  

SID NL Chapter invites all from within and outside the SID network  to follow the discussion on-line and interact by leaving comments on Twitter using the hashtag  #sidvalues.

8 septembre 2011: Website Redesign

In the near future, the SID Ottawa-Gatineau website will be receiving a complete makeover. We are currently working on a new design and exciting new features so stay tuned!

In the meantime, while we seek to keep the current website up to date, certain pages will not be updated until we launch the new site. However, we will still post event information and important announcements.

25 août 2011: SID O-G Retreat

On Saturday August 27 SID-OG will have a retreat to refine its strategic plans for the future.

Among the topics to be discussed are:

  • Outcomes of the 2010 retreat
  • Membership (institutional and individual): What they expect from SID-OG
  • How to facilitate the dialogue between private mining sector and development partners
  • How Work Groups can be effective forum for exchanging opinions and experiences.
  • Charitable Status option
  • Canada-wide option
  • Funding
  • SID-OG Advisory Group

The venue will be at a cottage on Pike Lake (near Perth).

19 juillet 2011: President's Message

Dear members of this Chapter of SID.

This is my first message to you, since you entrusted me as President from 1st July. I hope to be able to fulfil the mandate you gave me for the best of this Chapter and keep going the momentum started by Bill:
 
SID-OG
  • Our calendar is quite busy and we are back to some 80 members!
  • The SID-OG General Assembly elected an almost brand new Board (see our updated board members page) and the enthusiasm is there, plenty of ideas and volunteers.
 
SID International
  • As you know, in 10 days there will be the SID International Congress, which, after 2 days of Development related themes, will discuss also fundamental issues related to the International structure of SID itself. In this respect, I am asking you to give particular attention to the attached message addressed to all of us by Jan Pronk, the President of SID International . Bill and I already discussed this point and we will stress our position quite clearly. Any suggestion is therefore more than welcome.
  • Everybody received by mail the opportunity to cast a ballot for SID Governing Council Elections 2011. In this respect, of the two Canadian candidates we proposed, only Robin McLay was considered. As you can conclude from his biography (please see board members page), with Robin and his Institute for the Study of International Development at McGill, we can build up a very rewarding and interesting partnership. So please vote and do vote for him. 
After our return from the Congress, we will organize a retreat to refine our strategy on line with new events and ideas. Any suggestion is welcome.
 

In the meantime, I wish you all the best for this summer.

14 avril 2011: NOTICE TO MEMBERS: DEATH OF VIVIAN CUMMINS

Dear SID Members

It is with sadness and a deep sense of loss that we mention the passing away of Vivian Cummins, Membership Secretary for the Society for these past 8 years.

Vivian Cummins

Vivian was in many ways the heart and soul of the SID Ottawa Chapter. Her steady hand, professional oversight and managing of member relations was instrumental in maintaining the reputation of the Chapter and the Society and in ensuring its continued relevance and credibility. Everyone involved with the Chapter knew or knew of her.

Vivian was well known in the development community not only for her involvement with SID but with the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs where she was the creator and manager of the Resource Centre. A mentor to many graduate students, Vivian combined a professional ethic with deep compassion and understanding of personal, social and institutional complexities of the graduate school milieu that helped students navigate their way to graduation. Many have stated they would not have made it without her.

Vivian will be missed by all who knew her.

10 janvier 2011: Notice to Members: Death of Norma Walmsley


Dear SID Members

It is with sadness that we mention the passing away of Norma Walmsley, the last of the original founders of the Society for International Development Ottawa Chapter.

Norma was an avid supporter of SID Ottawa attending events and activities whenever she could and offered her time, good counsel and moral support to the organization over many years.

Norma was well known in the development community not only for her involvement with SID but with other organizations such as Match International. Norma was the 1987 recipient of the Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case among other honours.

Norma will be missed by all who knew her.

7 septembre 2010: Note from Incoming President

It is with pleasure and a sense of anticipation that I assume the office of President of the Society for International Development Ottawa-Gatineau Chapter following the creative and productive tenure of Soraya Hassanali. Soraya has served SID admirably and has preserved the Society's excellent reputation in the Ottawa community and built a legacy which has enabled those who have taken over the challenge of maintaining job well done. This is my, and my new Board's, challenge in the year ahead.

Looking ahead SID finds itself in a landscape of development programming, activities, and actions that is shaping up to be considerably different from what has gone before. Well known institutions are not as prominent as they once were, while government policy statements and CIDA reorganization is pointing to new directions and new areas of emphasis in Canada's development assistance programming.

Such times were made for the Society for International Development. As a forum for discussion we hope to ratchet up our activities through a new programming framework, and improve our presence and profile through increased activity and strengthening our relations with our Washington sister Chapter. How will this work?

The Ottawa Chapter is looking to establish a series of Work Groups, two this fall and three others in the new year. They will be Work Groups on Education, Gender, Shelter, International Health and Latin America. These self-organizing Work Groups will be lead by 2 Co-Chairs and will hold four events per year (once full formed) on topics of interest to the members of the Work Gorup.

SID Work Groups are intended to operate on the principles of inclusiveness, autonomy and responsiveness. By inclusiveness we mean it is open to all actors, CSO's, private sector, government agencies, universities and other interested parties. Indeed multi-stakeholder involvement is encouraged. By autonomy we mean that the Work Groups set their own agendas, from speaker's series, to Conferences, to the preparation of reports, to training or even sponsorship. By responsiveness we mean that the Work Groups address real issues and concerns of the Canadian actors who work in a given region or in a sector, be it of a technical, operational or policy related nature. Flexibility, adaptability and relevance will be a trademark of any Work Group.

The purpose of these Work Groups is to give voice, support and problem solving networks to Canadian practitioners who work internationally whatever their calling or interest. They are also intended to break down barriers, help the community of practitioners better understand each other's needs and perspectives and thereby enable improved, better informed and constructive dialogue with policy and decision makers.

But SID's work will not end there. The Board will continue to sponsor a High Profile Speaker series that will be of interest to the sector as whole. We will also work closely with the Washington Chapter in the run up to the SID Congress in October next year. This closer collaboration will be in the form of interaction with SID Washington Work Groups, and ensuring Canadian presence at the Congress in Washington.

It is early days yet but there has been interest with some Work Groups in formation and even some event planning going on. If you are interested in participating, or even want to start a Work Group we would love to have you involved.

27 janvier 2010: SID-OG Le message de la présidente

Bonne Année à tous nos membres.

Je suis ravie de poursuivre mon mandat en tant que Présidente de SID-OG et d'être entourée d'une équipe aussi dynamique et talentueuse. Je vous invite à visiter notre page web pour en savoir plus sur notre équipe.

Suite à notre assemblée générale en juin dernier, j'ai tenu deux séminaires de planification stratégique où nous avons convenu d'une nouvelle programmation et thématique pour l'année. Le thème pour 2009-2010 est L'aide au développement en temps de réformes. Notre nouvelle approche vise à organiser moins d'événements mais de plus grande envergure. En complément, nous tiendrons des activités plus informelles et à plus petite échelle. Pour ce faire, nous cherchons à collaborer avec les institutions académiques, professionnelles, diplomatiques, universitaires et gouvernementales. Nous pensons également organiser des activités de développement professionnel et de réseautage afin de répondre aux différents intérêts de nos membres. Pour ce faire, nous avons récemment revisité nos outils de communication en produisant une nouvelle brochure pour le Chapitre et en actualisant notre page web. Nous avons établi une présence sur Facebook, automatisé notre processus d'inscription aux événements et crée un système de paiement en ligne pour les inscriptions annuelles. Notre souhait est que l'ensemble de ces petits changements vous permettent d'interagir plus facilement avec nous.

En novembre dernier, SID-OG a collaboré avec l'Institut Canadian des Urbanistes (ICU), l'Association Canadienne pour les Nations Unies (ACNU) et la Fondation Aga Khan pour le lancement à Ottawa du Rapport mondial 2009 des Nations Unies sur les établissements humains : la planification des cités durables. Les intervenants, Dr. Winnie Mitullah et Dr. Mark Seasons présentèrent leurs points de vue à un public nombreux et bien informé.

En janvier, nous accueillons Fauzya Moore une ancienne présidente de SID-OG et membre de l'Université d'Harvard comme membre émérite. Fauzya discutera le thème : Développement et Leadership : Les diagnostics de croissance d'Harvard.

En février, SID-OG collaborera avec l'ACDI et l'Université de Carleton (NPSIA) sur une présentation de la Présidente de l'ACDI, Margaret Biggs. Le discours de Mme Biggs aura pour sujet le Développement dans un monde en évolution. Nous planifions également des panels avec le Président de SID-International Jan Pronk (avril) et Rajiv Shaw, le nouvel administrateur de USAID (mai) ainsi qu'un panel international sur la réforme de l'aide.

Nous avons de nouveau cette année de nombreuses opportunités de volontariat. Vous pouvez télécharger notre trousse 2009-2010 pour les bénévoles qui détaille les différentes opportunités de volontariat. Greetings to the Members of the Ottawa-Gatineau Chapter of the Society for International Development:

I am delighted to be returning for another term as the President of the Society. As we begin another year together I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the new Board for 2009-2010! You are invited to take a look at our revamped website at sidottawa.ca and review the bios and pictures of our dynamic new team. You will see some familiar faces as well as some new--each infused with a combination of skills, experience and most importantly, enthusiasm for the Society, and the year ahead.

Over the summer, we have worked hard to develop a new programming theme and approach. The theme for 2009-2010 is International Development in an Era of Reform, with events to commence in early November. This year we plan to hold fewer, but bigger events. These will be supplemented by smaller, more informal activities, like film presentations and discussions. We will put an emphasis this year on Outreach to new constituencies--academic, professional, diplomatic, and student. We will hold a number of professional development and networking events to cater to the interests of our members and friends. I invite you to visit the programming link on the website for more details on our autumn lineup.

This year will bring many new opportunities for those interested in volunteering with us. On our website you can see and download the 2009-2010 Volunteer Package which lists all of the coming volunteer opportunities. The first volunteer orientation session took place in September 2009. Our volunteer coordinator is scheduling another orientation volunteer session soon--so stay tuned! We are still recruiting new volunteers to help out with our dynamic Gender Equality Committee (GEC), and Outreach Committee, as well as our new Young Professionals, and Fundraising Committees. Je suis heureuse de vous souhaiter la bienvenue au nom du Conseil d'administration de la section Ottawa-Gatineau de la Société pour le développement International.

Notre programmation 2008-2009 va certainement vous intéresser, permettez moi de vous la présenter. Notre thème pour l'année à venir est : Le système international mis à l'épreuve : défis pour le développement. De plus, à l'instar de l'année passée, nous continuerons à maintenir nos deux courants d'événements - les évènements en soirée ouverts au grand public et les déjeuners rencontres réunissant praticiens et spécialistes.

Notre premier événement, au mois d'octobre, est une présentation de deux documentaires sur l'Afrique réalisés par WORLDwrite, une association caritative de production cinématographique pédagogique basée à Londres en Angleterre. Cette projection est ouverte gratuitement aux membres de la SDI-OG ainsi qu'au grand public. Celle-ci aura lieu le 16 octobre 2008 au Pub Heart & Crown (salle Black Rose) situé dans le Marché-By. La projection sera suivie d'une discussion.

Notre second événement en octobre est une présentation de Marc Shotland, Gestionnaire de programme principal au Laboratoire JPAL (Laboratoire d'action contre la pauvreté) du MIT, intitulée : Améliorer l'efficacité des programmes de réduction de la pauvreté grâce aux résultats scientifiques. Cet événement sera plus particulièrement intéressant pour les évaluateurs professionnels et fait partie de notre série Développement professionnel. La présentation se tiendra le 21 octobre 2008, entre 12h et 13h30, au Centre des Arts et Humanités St. Brigid, 314 rue St. Patrick (coin Cumberland). Le coût sera de 10$ pour les membres de la SDI-OG et de 20$ pour les non membres. Une collation sera servie.

Notre troisième événement sera présenté conjointement avec Unisféra. Il s'agit d'une présentation de M. Luc Gnacadja, Secrétaire exécutif de la Convention des Nations Unies pour la lutte contre la désertification sous le thème Dégradation des terres : une menace croissante pour le développement international, le 30 Octobre 2008 à 18h30 dans la salle Macdonald-Cartier (au sous-sol) de l'hôtel Capital Hill, 88 rue Albert, Ottawa. Le coût sera de 10$ pour les membres et de 20$ pour les non membres. Une collation sera servie.

Nous sommes présentement dans une phase de développement très intéressante pour notre section. J'invite le plus grand nombre de membres à participer à un maximum d'événements et d'être aux aguets des nouveaux développements à venir cette année.

15 septembre 2008: SDI Ottawa-Gatineau lance ce nouveau site

Saskia Ivens est consultante en développement international et spécialiste en matière d'égalité des genres. Elle a notamment travaillé pour ONU-Eau, en Afrique, ainsi que plusieurs autres ONG, sur des enjeux touchant aux genres et à l'eau. Saskia s'intéresse de manière générale aux questions de genres et de développement organisationel, tout en étant activement impliquée dans le développement de politiques, la gestion de projet, la formation et le développement de compétences.
